International Day of Plant Health
May 9, 2025CAHFSA Reaffirms Support for Caribbean Member States at 19th Session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-19)
The Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency (CAHFSA) proudly participated in the 19th Session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-19), held from March 17 to 25, 2025, at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy. This pivotal global event brought together experts, policymakers, and representatives from across the world to tackle critical issues related to plant health and phytosanitary measures.
The CPM serves as the leading international forum for collaboration on plant health, offering member countries the opportunity to develop and adopt International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs). These standards are vital for harmonizing approaches to pest management, safeguarding agricultural productivity, biodiversity, and facilitating safe international trade in plant products.
At CPM-19, delegates engaged in meaningful discussions on several pressing topics, including:
- Emerging Pests: Tackling the growing threat of newly identified pests and diseases to global agriculture.
- Capacity Building Initiatives: Strengthening the ability of Member States especially those in the Caribbean to implement effective phytosanitary measures.
- Climate Change and Plant Health: Understanding how climate change affects pest dynamics and identifying adaptive strategies to mitigate associated risks.
A key outcome of the session was the adoption of new and revised ISPMs, which will guide countries in managing pest risks more effectively and ensure consistency in phytosanitary practices across borders.
Another significant highlight was the launch of the Plant Health Campus, a forward-thinking online platform aimed at expanding access to training and resources for plant protection professionals. The platform offers e-learning modules, workshops, and up-to-date research to support best practices in phytosanitary management.
CAHFSA was honoured to represent the interests of Caribbean Member States at CPM-19. While attending as an observer, the organisation actively advocated for regional concerns and contributed to discussions by sharing valuable insights into best practices. CAHFSA's involvement was essential in promoting collaboration among Caribbean nations and ensuring that shared challenges in plant health are addressed collectively and effectively.
Our participation underscores CAHFSA’s commitment to enhancing agricultural resilience, promoting sustainable development, and securing food systems throughout the Caribbean. By standing united on the global stage, we continue to work towards a safer, healthier, and more food-secure future for all.
