CAHFSA and UWI sign MOU to strengthen Regional Capacity in Agricultural Health and Food Safety

On behalf of the UWI St. Augustine Faculty of Food Science and Agriculture, we are pleased to share that registration is now open for three new Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) short courses: https://sta.uwi.edu/cpe/short-courses/
These courses are open to interested persons and may be especially useful to farmers, students, home gardeners, agricultural workers, and members of the wider community who wish to build practical skills in these areas.
Available Courses
- Plant Protection and Quarantine
This course introduces participants to key areas in plant protection, including plant pests and diseases, pest risk analysis, plant diagnostics, phytosanitary regulations, surveillance, and biosecurity. The course includes classroom sessions as well as laboratory and field-based practical activities.
- Fundamentals of Sustainable Food Production at Home
This course focuses on how to start and maintain a home garden. Topics include choosing suitable crops, preparing growing media, selecting seedlings, setting up low-cost irrigation, managing pests, identifying nutrient deficiencies, and planning a garden using crop rotation and succession planting.
- Rabbit Production
This course introduces participants to the basics of rabbit production in the humid tropics. Topics include breed identification, handling, sex determination, breeding readiness, cage construction, feeding, record keeping, common rabbit diseases, and basic slaughtering and meat processing techniques.
