Why Caribbean Voices Matter in Global Food Safety Discussions
CAHFSA is pleased to share a special interview with Mr. Gavin Peters, Chief Executive Officer of CAHFSA, highlighting the importance of strengthening Caribbean participation in Codex Alimentarius and advancing food safety across the Region.
In the interview, Mr. Peters reflects on the need for Caribbean countries to be more consistently represented in Codex discussions, where international food standards are developed. He emphasized that as the Region works to increase agricultural production through initiatives such as 25 by 25 plus 5, equal attention must be given to food safety, standards, and export readiness.
Mr. Peters also speaks to key challenges faced by Small Island Developing States, including limited human resource capacity, fragmented food safety systems, and the need for stronger coordination among national agencies.
His message is clear: increasing production is important, but producing safe food that meets recognized standards is essential for protecting consumers, supporting trade, and strengthening the Caribbean’s voice in global food safety decision-making.
