Today, May 12, the Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency (CAHFSA) joins the global community in observing the International Day for Plant Health (IDPH), celebrated this year under the theme: “Plant Biosecurity for Food Security and Nutrition.”

This important day highlights the critical role that plant health plays in sustaining agriculture, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring the availability of safe and nutritious food for all. In the Caribbean, where agriculture remains a key pillar of economic development and livelihoods, strengthening plant biosecurity is essential to safeguarding our food systems and supporting resilient trade.

On this occasion, CAHFSA underscores the importance of collective action in preventing the introduction and spread of pests. Strong, science-based phytosanitary systems are vital to addressing emerging challenges, particularly those driven by climate change and increasing global trade.

CAHFSA remains committed to working closely with its Member States, regional partners, and international organizations such as the IPPC to strengthen plant health systems across the Caribbean. Through coordinated efforts in surveillance, pest risk analysis, capacity building, and policy development, the Agency continues to support the region in protecting its agricultural resources and ensuring long-term food security.

As we mark International Day for Plant Health, CAHFSA encourages all stakeholders; farmers, policymakers, private sector actors, and the public to play their part in promoting plant biosecurity. By protecting plant health today, we help secure food, nutrition, and livelihoods for generations to come.

We encourage you to share this message and help raise awareness of the importance of plant health.
